Charles Fréger

After completing the European Tour of Winter Masquerades (Wilder Mann) in 2013, Charles Fréger began exploring the ritual masked figures of Japan. He knew the country for photographing its sumo wrestlers (Rikishi, 2002-2003), and discovered, for this project, its rural areas. He traveled in the islands as well as inland and made an inventory of the masked figures, revealing the empathic relationship of the Japanese with their environment and their extreme awareness of nature’s vitality. In this series, the photographer continues his work at the crossroads of documentary, concept and ethnology. Born in 1975 in Bourges, he studied at the High School of Art and Design of Le Havre-Rouen where he graduated. There, he began photographing in series and discovered his interest for uniforms by snapping portraits of sailors on call: “I was already working on seriality. In the uniform, there was something conceptual, cold, that I liked.”
